As Spring approaches, squirrels will begin to search for new places to raise their young. In order to ensure that your home and yard are not the new nesting grounds for squirrel families on the block, follow these simple tips and tricks to keep them away or at least keep their presence to an absolute minimum.
Where Do I Begin To Keep Squirrels Away?
Removing all incentives is key to keep squirrels away. Bird feeders are the TOP incentives for squirrels to come into your yard and around your home. Most bird feeders are easy to access and offer a quick meal. In saying so, here are a few precautions you can take.
- Purchase a squirrel-proof bird feeder.
- Place any feeders at least 10 ft.- 15ft. away from your home to cut off ease of access.
- Hang feeders from a pole rather than on a fence or hanging from your house. The pole makes it harder for the squirrels to climb and reach the food.
- For an extra layer of precaution, you can also add Vaseline to the length of the pole. The slick surface makes it even harder for the squirrel to climb up.
Additional Tips & Tricks To Keep Squirrels Away
Periodically cut back any branches that may overhang your roof. It takes away the squirrels ability to EASILY gain access into your home. However, it does not make your home squirrel-proof. Read, “Will Trimming My Trees Keep Squirrels Out Of My House?” for more information on this subject.
Rake-up any fallen nuts and berries around the foliage in your yard. This will ensure that the squirrels are not lured in by the sight and smell of food. If they do not find any food nearby, then they should move on to your neighbors house.
Plant gardens at least 5 ft. away from your home. Cover your garden with mesh so the squirrels do not eat or damage your food. The number one reason squirrels enter your yard is for a food source.
Tightly seal any trash can lids near your home. In addition, place your trash cans away from your home if possible. If the critters can not access what is in your trash cans, then it is less likely for them to return.
