Start of The Bat Removal Project
This bat removal project in Davidson, North Carolina began with a complete interior and exterior home inspection. We were searching for the Myotis lucifugus or commonly known as the Little Brown Bat. These bats are shown in the picture to the right in a customer’s gable vent. Unfortunately, this particular colony had over forty-five bats. They had been in this particular vent for the last two seasons. They severely contaminated the attic with guano and urine. It was so severe that the homeowners could begin to smell the feces in their bedroom. Moveover, their bedroom was just below the vent in the attic!
Next Steps & Preventative Measures
The very next day, the Varmint Gone Team began installing ¼” x ¼” galvanize steel mesh over all the homes gable vents. This is to keep bats from re-entering the home through another vent. In addition, we prime and paint the steel mesh to match the vent color. Next, we fill all cracks and crevices around the home’s exterior with specialized black expandable foam. We do so in all the small cracks between the soffit trim and roof shingles. These areas often provide bats a safe place to hide.
Final Steps & The Completion Process
Lastly, a cleanup of the attic space to remove any guano and contaminated insulation is completed. First, we put on special suits, gloves and full-face filter masks to protect ourselves from harmful spores. Then, we spray a commercial liquid disinfectant /deodorizer/insecticide before and after the cleanup to kill any parasites and mold spores that could become airborne during cleanup and enter the lower levels of the home. Our greatest concern is to keep the homeowner and their family safe from Histoplasmosis, a very dangerous fungus common with bats. The spores from this fungus can seriously damage human lungs and even kill people with weakened immune systems. A professional bat removal service company should always handle the removal of bat guano.
